OAPI: EXTENDING THE PROTECTION OF GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS

A geographical indication is a name or sign used on products which correspond to
a specific geographical location or origin. The use of a geographical
indication may act as a certification that the product possesses certain
qualities, is made according to traditional methods, or enjoys a certain
reputation, due to its geographical origin.- Wikipedia
The African Intellectual
Property Organization (OAPI) has launched the second phase of its programme for
Extending the Protection of Geographical Indications in Yaounde as15
Cameroonian products were presented for labelling. The programme is backed by
the French Development Agency(AFD)
During the 1st
edition, it labelled Penja pepper and Oku honey. At this occasion, the
peculiarities of the following products
were emphasized;

Kilichi of
Ngadouéré,
·
Avocados of Mbouda,
·
Shallots from Lékié,
·
Pineapples from Bafia,
·
Leather from Maroua,
·
White yams from Mbé,
·
Onions from Garoua,
·
Stones of Pouma…
Explaining the programme, the Managing Director of
OAPI stated: We are now aware that labelling contributes to the protection of
traditional knowledge and know-how while at the same time generating consistent
income for producers”.
